Sustainability Policy

At The Black Arts Co, we aim to follow national and international practices in the field of sustainability and contribute to the process with our practices.

Our company, together with all its employees, business partners and stakeholders, in every sector in which it operates, adopts a sustainable business approach that is compatible with global goals and believes that the development in the economic field should be achieved in a way that covers all elements of the planet as well as all humanity.

Within this scope, our policy regarding sustainable development is as follows;

• All of the company's activities are carried out in accordance with the basic principles determined at national and international levels for the Sustainable Development Goals.

• Our company enables the use and development of innovative technologies that will contribute to sustainable development as much as possible in all sectors in which it operates.

• We attach importance to supporting stakeholder participation in decision-making processes, taking into account the wishes and expectations of stakeholders.

• Necessary work is being carried out to make the sustainability perspective a company culture and to try to raise awareness in this field among both employees and stakeholders.

• We enable all kinds of work to be carried out to ensure sustainability in the supply chain.

• By measuring and evaluating the economic, environmental and social impacts of all activities, we take improvement actions to reduce negativities and regularly publish sustainability reports in line with international standards.

Minor Changes Make Difference

We believe that minor changes make difference. Based on this, we are committed to apply sustainable projects and applications for our working environment. The workplace practices we carry out in order to raise awareness from the individual to the society by supporting sustainability in the workplace are as follows;

• Efforts are made to increase the use of renewable energy sources in energy consumption in all workplaces.

• In order to ensure the efficient use of water, projects that will raise awareness on this issue are developed and supported.

• We use recyclable, renewable or biodegradable products wherever possible. We use materials that do not contain toxic substances that can pollute water and soil or deplete the ozone layer, minimizing their impact on the environment. In addition to the product itself, we also consider its packaging.

• We support the hybrid working model in business lines where possible, to spend less on lighting, climate control and plug-in office equipment.

• In order to improve sustainability, we constantly evaluate our current practices and share the result reports with all employees once a year.

This Policy has been accepted by the Board of Directors dated 21.01.24 and it is decided to share it with all employees and business partners for informational purposes.

Environmental Policy

Purpose

The purpose of this environmental policy is to indicate our organisational commitment to addressing environmental issues within The Black Arts Co and through the services we deliver. This document outlines what The Black Arts Co will do to identify our environmental impact, how we will adapt to reduce our impact, and the responsibilities of team members in this space.

Scope

This policy applies to employees and contractors, both full time and part time. The policy will be shared with suppliers, potential partners and consultants wherever appropriate to indicate our commitment to environmental action.

Action

The Black Arts Co is committed to accelerating a just transition to net zero and reducing the impact on the environment from our operations and service delivery. We will address this through the following areas of work:

Staff engagement

We will promote responsibility for the environment within the organisation and communicate and implement this policy at all levels of our team. We commit to ensuring key members of staff have the time necessary to embed this work into our operations and providing further resource where possible and necessary.

We will encourage and support staff to set up a staff climate working group for those with a personal or professional interest in the area, making sure that this group is representative of all levels of the organisation.

We will support staff wellbeing by considering how we promote positive, action-led messaging about climate breakdown and provide opportunities for them to change the ways they work for The Black Arts Co in line with positive climate behaviours. We will provide space for staff to discuss this issue, including their own concerns and worries about environmental breakdown, through any wider wellbeing programmes in place.

The senior management team of The Black Arts Co will:

  • Share its expectation of responsibility for the environment to employees, board members and secretariat service providers.

  • Demonstrate clear commitment to the environment and lead by example, to ensure that the protection of the environment is promoted to all employees.

  • Support team wellbeing and work to combat hopelessness by committing to driving action in the organisation and setting a positive example.

  • The employees of The Black Arts Co will:

  • Be familiar with all the environmental requirements relevant to their role and responsibilities, including exploring the carbon footprint/environmental impact of specific areas of work;- take responsibility for their own impact on the environment while in the workplace and working from home, sharing ideas with other staff members on how to reduce personal impact.

Operations

The sustainability of our services is important for the people and organisations we work with.

As part of delivering our mission in line with our values and charitable objectives, we will assess the environmental impacts of our operations and set objectives and targets annually in order to improve our internal carbon emissions. We will review these targets annually. This work will include:

  • Monitoring utilities consumption in office buildings and home working

  • Promoting, encouraging and rewarding green travel choices from employees

  • Conscious consideration of the amount of travel necessary for our services to go ahead, encouraging green transportation modes and/or providing remote access to events

  • Review our waste and educate employees about effective recycling and reducing use of single use plastic where possible

  • Communicate with the communities we work with about climate breakdown and how it is relevant to our mission, vision and values

  • Generally increase communications about the climate crisis, to encourage awareness within our networks and the communities we work with

  • Comply with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations

Governance

Our trustees have overall responsibility for The Black Arts Co and its strategy. We commit to exploring on an annual basis the impact climate breakdown will have or is having on the people and organisations we work with. This work should include, but is not limited to:

  • Discussing at board meetings how our mission, vision and values intersect with climate breakdown and how to embed climate actions in our strategy, business planning and organisational goals.

  • Providing a short statement each year outlining the discussions we have had around climate breakdown and any action we have taken, alongside our aims for the following business year.

  • Making time to discuss practical strategic actions at the annual board meetings.

Suppliers and procurement

The suppliers of The Black Arts Co. will:

  • Share environmental policies or describe planned actions if a formal policy is not in place when entering into any contract or agreement.

  • Work with us to reduce the impacts of the goods and services purchased from them wherever possible.

  • We recognise that although we may not be able to reject suppliers based solely on their sustainability credentials that asking questions raises the profile of this issue, and that we may partly influence behaviours through this action alone. Our engagement with suppliers is designed to identify suppliers with values which align with our own, and we will make public our preference to work with organisations who minimise their environmental impact wherever possible.

Our Diversity Equality and Inclusion Charter

At The Black Arts Co. we embrace diversity and inclusivity, ensuring every voice is valued.

1. Making our commitment to change, visible and transparent

We recognise the need (both for staff and for the industry as a whole) to make our actions, beliefs and pledges transparent and visible.

In part, this is about sharing what we're doing - what's working, what isn't - with the industry as a whole, so we can collectively learn, improve and contribute to positive change.

2. Creating a genuinely inclusive culture

Diversity is a result of inclusivity. Without inclusivity, diversity is meaningless.

While we have a culture we're really proud of, and one that we have invested in managing and maintaining as we grow, it takes full commitment to ensure we are continuously evolving and adapting in a way that is relevant and meaningful.

3. Investing in education, learning & development

Although discrimination is systemic, it's not always widely understood nor always acknowledged.

Education around unconscious bias (be it towards age, disability, gender, race, religion or beliefs, sexual orientation, sociodemographic background or anything else) is vital to dismantle it.

We currently run a series of training programmes - from allyship to managing inclusive cultures and are committed to building on these each year.

4. Reinventing recruitment and outreach

There's clearly a issue surrounding proper diversity within the industry, and one cause of this is a lack of targeted / active outreach and recruitment mentalities and processes which help perpetuate the problem.

We currently partner with Creative Access to provide opportunities for individuals from under-represented communities to enter the creative industry and offer paid internships programmes. We are actively looking of non-social enterprises or other similar partnerships to build our current access to a wider pool of talent.

5. Setting clear and accountable goals

Behind the charter is a desire to continually improve our agency. So we ask all employees to complete a short survey which encompasses both qualitative measures on how inclusive the agency feels as well as quantitative measures for a window into how diverse our organisation is.

The survey runs each year with results being shared to the whole agency complete with actionable goals designed to address key themes that have been identified.
